A gun threat, what to do and what not to do?
In a krav maga, the threat of a gun is one of the complicated situations, it is a real threat of life and death and any mistake can cost us dearly.
So before we show “performance” and gun disarms like Rambo, we need to understand a few things and they are:
1. You can’t unload a gun like Rambo
2. A gun is a very dangerous weapon and it can kill you or seriously injure you both at close range and at relatively far range.
3. Getting a bullet is not like in movies where the main actor feels relaxed and continues to fight. (It is true that there are attackers who do not fall from a few bullets fired at them, but they are under the influence of alcohol/drugs. You are not like that, are you?).
Example video for section 3:
So is there anything to be done against a gun threat?
So, on the one hand, a gun threat is a dangerous situation, but in some cases there are actions that can still be taken, and there is a good chance of getting out of it alive.
First of all if you have encountered a gun threat where the attacker is just a robber… then just give him what he wants. Whether it’s the phone, the wallet or any other material thing. Why ? Because, your life is more important that these things.
Remember the following sentence “If it’s worth your life, then it’s worth to fight for it”.
If you are robbed with a gun threat or knife threatyou should ask yourself. Is it worth dying for? if not. Give him what he wants. That way you would have a better chance of getting out of it alive. One of my trainees even once said a phrase that popped into my head. “I asked my mother a question of sucj senarioand she said that if I am robbed then i should give everything the robber wants, she will buy a new one for me. The most inportant thing is that I stay alive.”
Okay but, What happens if it is worth dying for? So surely it is worth fighting for.
For example: kidnapping, rape, serious violence towards you or family members, a robber at home and more…
The second thing you need to understand is:
Any attack or threat depends on the behavior of the attacker. What does it mean ? This means that an aggressive and determined attacker holding the gun away from you would be very difficult to deal with. To verify this with an attacker with scattered confidence, distracted and hesitant, it would be easier for the eagles to deal with. There are dozens of videos on the net of real robbery cases in which the victim sends his hands several times in the direction of the gun to deflect it and the attacker does not shoot, and there are videos in which the victim only makes a movement towards the gun and receives a bullet or two.
Example video:
Shall we continue?
So how can you comfort yourself with the threat of a gun?
If the attacker with the gun has not yet made a decision to pull the trigger and that is already gratifying. Because you are still alive.
There is a huge difference between a threat and shooting someone in the face. If you were shot in the head by surprise, you wouldn’t be able to do much even if you were Krav Maga and Rambo experts…
A gun threat and the fact that they still don’t shoot me/want something from me is why we have an option to react and an option to deal with a gun threat. + We have time, time we can think.
To verify this when it comes to shooting my life, we don’t have time to think. Either we will jump on the shooting hand or at long ranges I will immediately seek cover.
In any case, there are no magic solutions! (not even among the Israeli Maga) my chance of surviving is roughly the same as my chance of getting hurt. I mean 50/50.
So what do we do against a gun threat from a technical point of view?
So:
The world of Krav Maga is divided into 2 categories in the threat of a gun:
1. Grab the gun and deflect with one hand, give neutralizing blows with the other hand to the head and disarm.
2. Grab and deflect while controlling the attacker’s hand, disarm the gun from the attacker’s hand and attack.
The guiding and agreed line between the two is that the barrel of the gun (line of fire) must be diverted immediately from the body of your.
Why do the 2 categories exist?
Category 1 claims the following:
The Krav Maga techniques must be based on natural body movements only which are reflexes of the human body. After all, in stressful situations and extreme situations, we will always do the instinct that is in each of us. The claim is that these movements are are stronger than any training we do, therefore from the first day of Krav Maga we will want to use techniques that are an integral part of our natural response.
Category 2 claims the following:
Category 1 execution of the technique does not take into account the attacker’s own reaction. Any natural body response/reflex of the defender itself will elicit a response from the attacker as well. And this is in three dangerous aspects: 1. Pulling back reflex. 2. Possibility of the attacker to use the other hand 3. The ability of the attacker to change angle. Therefore, according to them, grabbing and deflecting the gun with one hand is not equal even if a neutralizing blow was given if the attacker managed to pull the gun or make you be in the firing line.
And these can be seen in this video when the defender tries to grab the attacker’s gun with one hand and… the attacker pulls his hand back:

Shall we continue?
This video shows the defender’s mistakes. It can be seen that the sequence of actions was not correct. There is much to be said for this ‘defense structure’. There is enough information in the video. Now you understand why I am less connected to all kinds of “testing” videos staged in front of a trainee from the club and a plastic gun, there is no real threat, pressure and fear.
By the way, in the video, it’s the gas station owner who was eventually murdered by the robber. The robbers admitted that they only wanted to rob the gas station. But when the owner of the place started to fight, they shot and killed him. The whole incident was caught on the station’s cameras. Do you think it was worth dying for?
